My name is Jake Murphy, and I am the owner of True Strength Athletics LLC, based in Long Island, New York. My work focuses on helping athletes develop a strong mindset by creating routines that build self-confidence and self-esteem. I also design training programs to elevate their performance on the field or court.
Athletics never came naturally to me—I had to rely on advanced training programs to maximize my athleticism and become the best athlete I could be. My journey began at Longwood School District in Suffolk County, continued at a small Division 2 college in Brookville, NY (LIU), and culminated at Syracuse University, where I had the opportunity to play lacrosse at the highest collegiate level.
The knowledge and skills I’ve gained through these experiences have led me to coaching, where I am dedicated to guiding athletes toward reaching their full potential. My purpose drives me to be the best version of myself every day, and my passion fuels my commitment to mentoring the next generation—helping them grow both on and off the field.
My Coaching Philosophy:
Coaching is about individualization, building relationships, showing support, and helping others achieve their goals. It’s about helping people find their "why," understand their purpose, and realize their capabilities. I work with incredibly strong individuals whose dedication, enthusiasm, and work ethic inspire me to stay committed to my own goals.
Coaching means practicing what you preach! I cannot ask someone else to give more than I am willing to give myself. Likewise, I cannot expect a client to listen to me if I am not willing to listen to them. Communication is essential for growth. A great coach doesn’t assume they know more than the athlete does about themselves—instead, they create opportunities for individuals to grow in both knowledge and confidence. A coach encourages athletes to recognize what they are truly capable of.
I have firsthand experience working with coaches who refused to listen, viewing communication as a weakness rather than a strength. I’ve also been fortunate to work with coaches who had full faith in me and my abilities, allowing me to excel both on the field and in the classroom. On the other hand, I’ve dealt with coaches who looked down on me, which damaged my confidence and self-esteem—ultimately affecting my performance. These experiences have shaped my belief in the power of coaching done the right way.
Just as coaches encourage others to learn and grow each day, they must do the same—constantly evolving to better serve those they mentor. Coaching is not just about guiding others; it is a lifelong pursuit of self-improvement, leadership, and unwavering commitment to those we have the privilege to coach.

A Little Into My Journey:
After graduating with my Bachelor's Degree in Physical and Health Education, I took a semester to advance my studies while playing lacrosse at Syracuse University. This is where my passion for coaching truly developed. The best leaders know how to motivate, inspire, and influence each athlete to become the best player they can be.
As a 5th-year player, I was part of a team environment that was supportive, educational, and understanding. However, the experience I had there challenged my perspective in unexpected ways. It was at this moment that I gained a deeper understanding of what life is truly about—support, love and friendship.
My experience at Long Island University embodied exactly that and more. While LIU lacked the material resources and historical prestige of Syracuse, the culture and environment created by the people there were incredible. The biggest lesson I learned was that culture and community will always triumph over fancy facilities. I believe there was a reason this experience came into my life.
Syracuse allowed me to compete at the highest collegiate level and face incredible athletes such as Brendan O'Neill and the Kavanagh brothers, while also playing alongside great teammates like Cole Kirst, Joey Spallina, and Saam Alexo. The knowledge I gained from my experiences—both on and off the field—was essential in shaping my purpose: to inspire and guide the next generation of athletes.
Testimonials:
My experience training with you in the gym and on the field has been great! Since working with you, I feel more confident in my abilities, especially with my stick skills and my footwork. When I first started strength training I had pain and popping in my knees, now I barely ever get that pain and I also feel much stronger overall. One of the things you taught me that I specifically like is the you vs yourself mindset, this has helped me stay motivated and consistent.
-Caden S (Attackmen, St Josephs College LI)
There a multiples moments where I felt like I walked away a better player/athlete. Today I grew as a player and me and Jake worked on my left handed power cradle out of a move.
-Braden M (Midfielder, Queens College NC)
I’ve never really had a personal trainer before but right when I started working with Jake I enjoyed working out and really felt stronger and more confident every time I step on the field.
-Gavin M (Goalie, Legacy LC 2026)
Awesome! I learned and developed a lot! Before starting our training I was very unconfident on my skills. Now I’ve improved not only physically in terms of stick skills and conditioning, but also mentally in terms of footwork and lacrosse IQ. I especially enjoy the LSM specific drills for defense and as a faceoff wing.
-JD C (LSM, St Josephs College LI)
My training session went much better than I could have expected. Jake is very knowledgeable and broke down the parts of my game that I wanted to focus on and explained the significance and purpose of each drill. In our session I was able to focus not just on the execution of each rep, but Jake pushed me to be attentive to the little things that may be holding me back on the field. Through my session I learned that mental reps are just as important as physical ones. This style of training is something that I will focus on going forward because it allows me to slow down the game and really get the most out of my time on the field. In all, I was pushed physically and mentally, which is an important aspect of excelling as an athlete.
